Where to Start Your Web Promotion Efforts

Whether you have an off-line business that you would like to promote or are looking to start or improve an online business there is one very important place where everyone should start. I would call it the nexus or the center of your web promotion universe.

It all starts with keywords and keyword research. Keywords are how people find things on the Internet. Keywords are why Google has turned into a multibillion dollar company. They figured out a way to better interpret the keywords that you type into a search engine in order to get you the best and most relevant results. Incredible, just by typing in a few words into a little box you can probably get what you are looking for within a matter of seconds.

You've got to pick the right keywords for your business

The best way to start picking your keywords is to get into the mind of your customers or prospects. What words would they be using when searching for your products or services? If you have an existing business with customers, it's always a good idea to ask them what words or phrases they used to find you. If you're starting up a new business it's best to start with the target market that you are after.

How do I compile and refine the process that will get me the best results?

The first thing you have to do is to compile as big of a list of potential keywords as possible, as related to your market. you can begin to do this by choosing one word keyword phrases that you think relate to your type of market. For instance, if you sell golf equipment, it's only natural that you would start off with the keyword phrase golf "equipment". From that point you can use keyword generation tools such as is the Google keyword tool or Wordtracker. These services are free to use and allow you to generate many variations of the keyword phrase you start with. For instance, if you started with "golf equipment", the keyword generation tools would generate keyword phrases such as "buy golf equipment", "used golf equipment", or "Ping golf equipment". You get the picture.

Once you've generated a large list of keyword phrases you've got to go through the list and pick out as many of them as are related to your marketing efforts. The process of refining your keyword phrases involves checking the amount of traffic that each keyword phrase receives on a daily basis and checking to see how competitive that keyword phrase is. The goal being to find keyword phrases that get a good amount of traffic, are highly relevant to your marketing efforts, and don't have too much competition, so that you can come in and realistically compete for those keyword phrases.

With proper research and using the right promotion techniques, you can get fantastic rankings for your chosen keywords.
